The facility at Etzel near Friedeburg consists of 19 salt caverns in which natural gas is stored at high pressure at over a thousand metres below the earth’s surface.
The caverns are cylindrical cavities that have been leached out in the underground salt formation. They are oil and gas-tight. The average cavern is around 620 metres deep, 35 metes in diameter, and has a geometric volume of around 580,000 cubic metres.
In the past, natural gas storage facilities have predominantly been used to compensate for seasonal fluctuations in demand. Today, however, they are also used as a flexible means of optimising supply, as a reserve in the event of supply problems, and on an hourly basis to counterbalance surpluses and shortfalls.
Equinor Storage Deutschland is certified according to ISO 50 001:2018 standard.

Working gas capacity and firm injection and withdrawal capacity (see below) are fully booked long term since the decision to expand the Etzel Gas-Lager. Therefore Equinor Storage Deutschland is not in a position to offer storage services and related capacity products. As consequence, no final tariff or standard tariff for certain capacity products exist. In relation to the obligation according to Art. 13 Abs. 2 VO (EU) 2022/2576 to publish the “final tariffs“ Equinor Storage Deutschland currently is unable to define and publish any final tariffs or standard tariff for any capacity product. Equinor Storage Deutschland also does not expect to negotiate any new storage service contracts in the near future. In case any storage service and related capacity product will become available for marketing, Equinor Storage Deutschland will publish such storage service offer including final tariffs for the related capacity product.
